This toy was patented in December 1875, at the end of the Civil War and in time for the Centennial of 1876. A larger toy was also produced using the same patent. It's called the Independence bell toy. The red painted wheels are 4" in diameter, much larger than the typical cast iron bell toy wheels. One of the wheel spokes is different from the others. The eccentric spoke design and wide rims of this wheel indicate they were probably designed for a locomotive.
